Or a reincarnation of Clow Reed anyway. Eriol may seem mean or cruel towards Sakura, but he is helping her. He is just testing her and helping her transform all the Clow Cards into Sakura Cards. Li sensed there was something weird about Eriol and doesn't like him much. Eriol and Li sort of become rivals. Sakura could sense Clow Reed's magic, but had no idea it came from Eriol the whole time.
